Fiction/Vids/Meta/Etc. Suggested for Recommendation
We here at Torchwood House make every attempt to recommend all the great stories out there. Our goal is to put all the good fiction here so that everyone can enjoy it.

But, try as we might, not one of us has been able to stay home reading and reccing all day long. Consequently, some stories will occasionally slip through the cracks. Here's your chance to remedy that situation. Should you feel we have missed a truly admirable story, let us know. Include the author's name, the title of the work, and a link to the story.

We will read it, and either rec it or not without explanation. (Though, take note that the reccing might take some time, and we do not delete the comments once the item suggested has been recced.) We've recced a number of suggestions from this list already, and will continue to do so in the future.

As well as fanfic, we happily rec fanvids, meta, fansites, fanart - pretty much anything that fans create may find its way here.

Anything by Sam the Storyteller is well worth a rec (and I do mean anything)

FYI - We're planning a special "Sam" month for either August or September. A kind of "Featured Author" thing. I insisted on Sam being our first project because he is so very, very good. Thanks for that, however. It's nice to know Sam is well loved.

Pocket Watch Boy by Mhalachaiswords

Well-written, extremely entertaining alternate background for Ianto and it crosses into DW. What more can you ask for?

Shades of Ianto by Sarcasticbabble

http://sarcasticbabble.livejournal.com/12581.html

A friend recommended this to me as "The most EPIC fic that I've ever encountered." She was right. The author really delved into Ianto's thoughts and private life while also taking us through 2+ years of his life. There were some funny parts, a heavy dose of angst, action, and a happy ending. This story is extremely well-written though it takes some time to read considering the 200,000+ word count.

I'll second that, I just started reading it a few days ago (I finished the prologue and series one and am about to start series two) and it's unbelievable! I'm just blown away and totally hooked.

I like to also recommend Proof of Your Existence (http://tbb.destinysgarden.net/submissions/19_proof.html) It's an amazing AU about Ianto's past. It's up on my favorite fanfic of all time. It is also written by Sarcasticchick who wrote Shades of Ianto and is currently working on a new AU called The Windhovers.

Title: Paradox
Author: SnowWhiteLiar
Site: http://tbb.destinysgarden.net/submissions/22_paradox.html
Summary: When Torchwood were sent to the Himalayas, Ianto chose to stay behind and look after the Hub. He didn't think it would be quite this much trouble.

Why rec it?: Because it's freakin' brilliant and kind of warps your mind and breaks it. The ending is magnificent and drastic and I really wish there was a sequel.

I will admit to beta-bias, but Constant as the Changing Weather by crystalshard is one of my all-time, must rec/read/plug til the cows come home fics, for back-story, cool gadgets, swirly-coated Jack, a Ianto who's efficient but not super!Ianto, a sense of wry humour and gripping drama.

LIST

Title: Made My Own Pretty Hate Machine
Author: paperclipbitch
Site: http://paperclipbitch.livejournal.com/71708.html
Summary: The Master first meets Ianto at Torchwood One.

Why: Let me say this: Ianto didn't end up in the Himalayas. This fic is so fucked-up and heartbreakingly sad, and by the end you'll desperately want to know what happens after, but you never will.

---

Title: Certain For the Dead
Author: Meredith Bronwen Mallory (garnettrees)
Site: http://garnettrees.livejournal.com/152739.html
Summary: The past never dies: few understand that better than Jack Harkness. Twenty years ago, Jack saved a little Welsh boy from the world of 'faeries'. It's only now he discovers he's still paying the ransom. [Jack/Ianto]

Why: The format's a bit wonky, but besides that? Brilliant. An AU that starts after "Small Worlds." Excerpt: ("You took from us once. You have the boy-child, and now we will have the girl.")

---

Title: Things Rank and Gross Possess It Merely
Author: Meredith Bronwen Mallory (garnettrees)
Site: of 5: I | II | III | IV | V
Summary: In the Year That Never Was, the Master's prisoners struggle to maintain their determination and their sanity. It's a house of cards, and the Master has just brought aboard new victims that will bring it crumbling down. J/I, non-sexual torture warnings

Why: Ok, so I'm a big fan of Ianto-in-the-Year-That-Never-Was fanfic. This currently only has two chapters out, but it's fantastic. Furthermore, Tish's point of view was an absolutely perfect choice, and the Master! Well done. Very well done.

Title: Chronology
Author: miss_andromache
Site: http://community.livejournal.com/tw_flashfic/30651.html
Summary: Set in “Rose’s” AU. Jack is trying to recruit Ianto to the Time Agency…

Why: Oh, c'mon. The words "Ianto", "Jack", and "Time Agency" and you haven't jumped to read it yet? Time travel is great fun, especially from both ends: linear and nonlinear.

Hey there! So, demotu asked me to drop some recs here. Frankly, I'll bet you guys have all or most of these down on your own lists already, but I thought I'd give it a go. Also, a lot of these blur the line between Torchwood and Doctor Who, but they've got a strong Jack presence.

Glass and Water by becky_h. Five/Jack.

Parts of the Process by asrai99. Ianto. Long. Has a 12th? Doctor. Full of awesome, and Jack backstory.

The Harkness Supremacy by fangrrl_squees. A James Bond crossover! How awesome is that?

Light Bending Backwards by trolllogicfics. The Doctor, with Jack backstory. I kind of love paradoxes.

The Top Five by cribbins. The Doctor and Jack, just hanging out, being boys.

Hamartia by paperclipbitch. I don't even like Owen/Ianto. But I like this fic.

These Parts Won't Break by clockstopper. Owen-Ianto bodyswap! One of the few (few!) good fics from the Big Bang.

Bad Timing by apiphile. More of a crossover than the others, but it's got good Jack.

Ianto's Traumatic Afterschool Special Fic by apiphile. A bit cracky, you'd think. No, just a hair irreverent, and awesome Owen-Ianto relationship.

From The "You Guys Are Quite Clearly Going To Hell" Files, Part One. by [Bad username: by apiphile]. This is the crack. The Special Hell Crack. Because it's awesomely hilarious. The mental ward AU.

Matryoshka by Kaneko. Jack backstory. Did I mention I love paradoxes?

And since you're reccing vids, you're going to rec Papa Don't Preach by fan_eunice and trelkez, right? Right?

All the Dishes Rattle in the Cupboard When the Elephants Arrive by out_there. I love any fic where Ianto meets the Doctor.

The End of a Circle by haldane. Not exactly a paradox, just predestination.

Five Times Owen Harper Said "Let's All Have Sex" by ninjasnano. Gives brilliant depth to a throw-away line.

This is How the Universe Ends by googlebrat. Technically a crossover with Discworld, but I've never read those books, and it posed no problem to me.

Vitamin A by basingstoke. Bas is brilliant in every fic. This is Jack and Owen like I can't write them.

The Right Kind of Doctor by joonscribble. Lovely Owen character study, with each of his teammates.

Idiot's Guide to Temporal Phenomenon by in_the_bottle. More brilliant Ianto and Owen interaction. Plus, Torchwood doing their usual competent job. Um.

Dead Again by entangled_now. Jack being a pouty drama queen.

Gone for a cup of tea (back in six months) by netgirl_y2k Also a crossover -- Mickey and Rhys in the TARDIS! The Greatest Adventure!

The Fate of the Earth Depends On It, Probably by doyl_sb4. It's a Black Books crossover!

We're mostly not replying to these, but since I sent you over! Thanks for the fabulous list - especially the more unusual pairings.

Disinterred by seize. - Ianto and Owen research how many times they've been retconned. Ianto discovers that some things forgotten are best left that way.

First of all, this was a dark fic and people need to read the warnings. But, I'm recommending this story because everything is so well written: the dialogue, the action, and the characters. There were moments when I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation (and horror) of what was coming next, and other times when I couldn't restrain my shouts of excitement. The relationships between the characters was also wonderfully shown. Even though the subject was dark, this story captivated me.

2 vid recs
I love that Torchwood House is reccing vids, here are my two favorites...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OctFXZOUbWc

-In the above clip, Hitler reacts to the season 2 Torchwood finale. It has some bad language, but c’mon he’s Hitler!

http://www.imeem.com/faneunice/video/rC9tuAba/greensilver_and_eunice_papa_dont_preach_tv_video/

-In this, my absolute favorite fanvid by anyone ever, someone has left Jack alone and preggers. Jack explains to his father-figure that he’s keeping his baby.

(I don't know why these aren't linky. *mumble grumble* It's worth it to copy/paste!)

I have recs! For the gourmet porno.

In Service by smokeringhalos.

So many stopwatch fics, so few great stopwatch fics. In Service is exceptional.

Moving In by ukcalico.

Achy, pre-series Janto, from a believably naive Jack's POV.

Angelystor by Pike
Ianto-centric. There’s something awry in the Welsh village of Addoedsbren: a bubble in the rift, a supernatural occurrence or alien interference. The team investigates. WIP.

Why: A very long and plotty episodic fic. World War I zombies, a cursed yew tree, a rift between two points in time, and an Alien Underground Network. All of Torchwood Three shines in this (well, maybe not Myfanwy), with Ianto, Tosh and Owen gleaming especially bright. Some of the description is possibly not for the faint of heart and intense of imagination. Highly recommended.

"Lucky Streak" by remindmeofthe

SUMMARY: Owen finds himself in the middle of something a little outside his usual frame of reference. AU starting shortly after "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and continuing through "Dead Man Walking."
RATING: R for violence.
WORD COUNT: Approximately 5200.
CHARACTERS/PAIRINGS: Owen, Martha, Jack, Michael. Owen/Michael, a touch of Jack/Ianto, and a vague bit of Owen/Martha.
WARNING: Character death. Also, slash.

Personal recommendation: Cat is a very thorough writer at the best of times, but this is excellently-paced and seriously frightening, incredibly compelling and unpredictable stuff. Not for the faint of heart but absolutely for anyone who likes well-crafted fic.
