Meet the Team of Torchwood House
The folk here at Torchwood House are a great, energetic, imaginative bunch. It's a pleasure to work together on this project, and we're sure all of you would like to know a little bit more about us, otherwise you would have ignored the link. So, here we are, warts and all, with a love of Torchwood and well-written fiction in common.

Hello there, and you are? :D

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

My Christian youth group leaders (hah) watched Doctor Who, and referenced Torchwood as having a bisexual action hero. I was so there. Downloaded the first season a week before the second started, and never looked back.

Who is your favourite character, and why?

Jack is my favourite character, because of a combination of love for messed-up heroes and John Barrowman himself, whom I find absolutely vibrant on screen. Ianto is my favourite fic point-of-view character, however, since his head is a little easier to get in to, and his snarky, insular normality appeals to me.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

Oh goodness. I love poignant, character-introspective oneshots. I love kinky smut-filled PWPs with character work. I love episode-like multipart contained stories with brilliant characterization. I love AUs that explore character motivations through interesting changes to the canon. biggrin.gif

Yep, I just love when people treat the character right. But I'm not attached to any particular characterization, as long as it's in-line with canon and done well, I'm there.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?

Obviously, characters that are so true they make my heart hurt. That's my biggest thing. When reccing, I look for fics that either take a classic fic trope and own it, thoroughly, or try something new to great success. I mostly read Jack and Ianto fanfic, but I love both those characters in friendships with the rest of the cast. I love some good UST and smut, but it better be creative and emotionally charged, or else it's boring. Humour done right also wins me over frequently, and beautiful but sparse prose is my stylistic weakness.

Hi. My name is thaddeusfavour and I like Torchwood. A lot.

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

I'm a long time lover of Doctor Who. When that show introduced the character of Captain Jack, I knew I'd follow him anywhere. Then word came out about Torchwood, starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack. I was so there.

Who is your favorite character, and why?

Jack! I love Jack because he's a hero, but flawed, because he tries even when it looks like he's going to fail. I love him when he's flirty and sexy, or intense and threatening. I love the coat. I love the big...gun. "He is dashing. You have to give him that."

I'm also mightily fond of John Barrowman. He seems like a nice guy, and he just lights up in front of the camera. And, I absolutely adore his big, wide grin!

What kind of fanfic do you like best

Well written ones. Really, I can read almost anything, any plot, any idea, as long as the author makes it work. However, I especially like a good, long read and slash. I love action and adventure, and if you throw in some angst and hurt/comfort, I'm a happy camper. I like stories with good characterization and solid plot. That said, my favorite kink is a well written mpreg. (Don't laugh! They might be few on the ground, but they are out there.)

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?

Solid language, characterization, and plot. I love it when I can find something new, or out of the ordinary. I mostly look for Jack/Ianto, but I love it when the team features prominently as well. Let's not forget good dialogue. When Owen is snarky and Jack whips out those one liners, that's usually a win in my book as well.

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

A friend made me watch Everything Changes with her, and I was hooked.

Who is your favourite character, and why?

It's a tossup between Jack and Toshiko. They're both subtle, nuanced, detailed characters of a stripe not often seen on television, and Toshiko in particular has a rare courage that has always caught my eye.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

I love stories with detail, depth, nuance and above all intimacy. Explorations of intimacy, be they between lovers or friends or family, are by far and away my favourite things to read and write. I adore stories that are mature, intelligent, and adult and make me go away feeling like my brain has been stretched, regardless of characters or pairings. Extra points for any of the TW women--Toshiko, Martha, Gwen, Suzie, and Emily and Alice-- being awesome, and double extra bonus points for real sound science in a sci-fi fandom.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?

Aside from the basics of good grammar, good writing, good spelling, and the characters being true to the show (or the author has a compelling reason for them being OOC)...

...The stories I recommend will be very, very mature in terms of subject matter but will not have much in the way of so-called "adult content." In other words, expect me to abuse the living daylights out of the "erudite" tag.

...I will be exclusively recommending genfic and the less common ships, and characters. I love me some Jack/Ianto, but there is just so much of it out there that the genfics and odd ships get lost in the mix.

...Whenever I can, I'll be recommending the explorations of intimacy like I described above. And love stories. Because I like them.

Why, hello there! I'm ADDyke...

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

One of my earliest TV memories is Doctor Who reruns on a Saturday morning, so when ‘New Who’ was announced I was chuffed and hesitant at the idea (I was not happy at the casting of Billie Piper –to this day Rose is my least favourite companion, Christopher Eccleston made me give it a chance though). Of course I absolutely fell in love with Captain Jack so when the spin-off was announced I couldn’t wait – so much so I held a Torchwood première party when Everything Changes/Day One was first aired – complete with pizza! At that time I didn’t have my own internet connection so I’ve only been active in fandom since the start of Series Two.

Who is your favourite character and why?

Ianto Jones – he is such an endearing character. He has that awkwardness, the way he’s a bit of a smart-alec, but he’s slightly socially inept and doesn’t quite fit in. He seems quiet and stoic but we know he is driven by very strong emotions. I do see a lot of myself in Ianto, and he’s a fantastic character for a fanfic writer to work with because we know so little about him. I adore Tosh, again because I see a lot of myself in her as well and I really identify with her, the heartbreaking loneliness she suffered from, and waiting for someone to see. (Plus ‘Greek Bearing Gifts’ made me think I stood a chance with her for five seconds!) And Captain Jack is an absolute legend of a character as well.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

I love well-developed logical plots and fics that give true (and perhaps original) insights into the characters we know and love. Well researched fic (be it historical or scientific) always shines and is always a delight to read. My guilty pleasure is angst, especially fics in which characters are seriously injured, gravely ill or die (but only if the medicine is accurate). I certainly love my Jack/Ianto but I also like Jack/Historical Character and fics set within Torchwood pre-New Year’s Eve 1999. And I adore Emily and Alice!

Is there anything in particular you look for when you recommend fic?

Well-written IC portrayals of the characters and their relationships, slightly different/out-of-the-box way of looking at established canon (or filling in the canon gaps) and good science/history/medicine always win my heart. A well-flowing plot is pretty much essential, and I hate sex getting in the way of plot, so much so that a fic heavy on the sex has to be exceptional for me to rec it.

hello

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

interestingly enough, it was friends i'd met in another fandom, they started talking to me about doctor who and torcwhood (before it had even come out) and so i watched the new dw series and tw and well, that was that

Who is your favourite character, and why?

i'd have thought it would be jack, but it ended up being ianto, right from the first episode, even though he was barely in it, i'd already been told of what happened later (also, i kind of watched them out of order) but his wit and dry humor got me right away

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

wonky time-travel with a jack/ianto twist, anything long and plotty, drama and humor goes hand-in-hand for me, building on canon,

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?

clearly, wonky time-travel i love, but anything well-written, interesting story, good dialogue, i LOVE dialogue and when i can actually HEAR the voices, innovative story-telling, when an author has picked up on one tiny detail from canon and expanded it so well it makes me rethink everything

How were you introduced to Torchwood?
My friends had been watching the new Who for some time and started on Torchwood – I’d been disdainful. Then, I had some time and, for some reason, asked to borrow their Torchwood DVDs; I watched the entire first season in a single sitting and never looked back. Gwen held me through most of the first season (Jack was clearly an intentionally unlikable character in the beginning of S1) but once Jack began to engage emotionally, I was better able to sympathize with him. The male/male sexuality was part of the appeal but what I most loved about the show was the examples of male emotional closeness – something that is almost entirely absent in US TV

Who is your favorite character, and why?
Jack. I love stories about the hard work of being a hero; the decisions that have to be made, the consequences of them and the way it changes a person – and the way they look to outsiders. Gwen and Ianto hold second place in my affections; Ianto because of his lovely, repressed wry humor and Gwen because of her determined emotional honesty and insistence on taking care of herself.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?
Oh, I’m pretty easy, actually. I like medium length stories, most of the time (though I write long ones – go figure) and I love spare language that expressed complicated emotion. I prefer stories that ‘show’ not ‘tell’, ones with action or plot and I have a kink for … well, kink. I’ll read almost any ‘kinky’ stories and the more variant the kink the more interested I am in it – because I’m interested in the emotional trip getting to the kink.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?
Right now, I’m searching out older, less well known fics that may never have made it onto LJ or are from authors that are not specific Torchwood writers. On a wider scale, I like stories that explore Jack’s life before Torchwood and his relationship to the Doctor.

How were you introduced to Torchwood?
I've always very much enjoyed David Tennant as an actor, so I'd peaked in on one or two episodes of "Doctor Who." So when, like x-tricks, I found myself with some extra time on my hands, I sat through almost the entire third season of Who in one sitting. "Torchwood" was just a short leap from there, with a nice soft landing: John Barrowman. Like many, I came for the Jack and stayed for the Ianto... and all the rampant, gleeful snogging that went along with season one.

Who is your favorite character, and why?
I had something of a love-hate relationship with Jack during the second season, but I love contemplating the endless (literally) implications of what his predicament would mean to an "ordinary" human person. Sure, Jack has a background that prepares him slightly better than your average man, but he is still very much trapped in his human psyche, and the ramifications fascinate me.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?
I will admit it: I'm a shameless romantic. So, give me a lot of angst and a happy ending then call me happy. Of course, the better the prose (and punctuation!), the happier I am. And there's not nearly enough original episode-style fic in the fandom; I want more of that! Lately, I'm beginning to find myself drawn to more gen fics, and more unconventional pairings, though I prefer to end up back at canon by the story's end.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?
Of course I want great writing and a good plot, but what I really look for is a story that sticks with me for a couple of days. If I'm actively seeking out the next chapter or pondering the implications days later, chances are the story was well-worth reading.

*waves* Greetings and salutations.

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

My partner emailed me a picture of the Jack/John Hart kiss from "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (well, it was anonymouslyhot!fellow/Spike to me then!) with a note attached reading, "why aren't we watching this, again?" Even with incentive like that, we were determined to watch the whole 'verse from the beginning, so this past June, we started out with series 1 of New Who, and went straight forward from there in order. It took us somewhere between a month and six weeks to get through everything, and I don't think I've ever loved a fandom quite so much.

Who is your favourite character, and why?

Jack. He's really a character on a grand scale, and he allows you to do so much with him. I think I love his flaws most of all, and the immense span of his history. Also he's a charmer, an asshole, a soldier and used to be a space pirate/con man. What's not to love? Next, probably is a tie between Ianto and Owen, but I love Gwen and Toshiko too. *throws hands up* Oh, all right, I give up! No more of this hierarchy. I'm just a big squidgy mess of love for them all. Jack is still special though. And Myfanwy. I ♥ her too.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

I'm fairly omnivourous about content, but immensely picky about quality. Long plotty fic is probably my first love, but I also adore the type of vignette that just knocks you off your feet at the end. I prefer my comedy and tragedy mixed, just like in life (and on the show). I read a lot of erotica and also a fair amount of gen; kinkwise, I've yet to be squicked, but I'll stop reading very quickly if it seems out of character. I'm fond of d/s & s&m. I like adventures. I like a good dark!fic, but I'm not averse to a well written domestic, if it avoids being saccharine, and keeps a little bit of an edge. Same goes for all love stories really, but if they manage to stay sharp, I'm a big fan. I adore unconventional love stories and chosen families; Torchwood gives us a lot to play with there, and I like to see that taken advantage of. There's no pairing I won't read, but aside from dreadful grammar/spelling and trashy romance-novel-esque plots, character bashing is the quickest way to get me not to read a fic.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?

Humour. Drama. Sharp characterization. Dialogue that sparks. Beautiful writing that manages to remain unpretentious. An original setting or idea or interpretation. Something that moves me. Well researched stories that make sense. Exploration of consequences. Fics that explore Torchwood's relationship to its sister shows - i.e. I'm always looking for the Doctor or Sarah Jane to visit the Millenium Centre, or Team Torchwood to take a trip on the TARDIS.

I also adore vids, so you'll be seeing me rec a lot of those.

Hello!

How were you introduced to Torchwood?
I’d heard various people talking about it on LJ for a fair while, but it sounded a tad silly, as did the new Dr Who. Somehow I got into watching Who in late 2008, fell in love and consumed it all - in a somewhat backwards order. So it wasn’t until very late that I finally watched the first season, and low and behold, found Captain Jack. I adored him from the first minute on screen, and had to have more. Torchwood it was. With the dark and sexy content it was instant love.

Who is your favourite character, and why?
I hate to be the same as everyone else, but yes, it is Jack. I love that Jack’s character enables a different view on ‘our’ culture. That and Barrowman is just plain joy to watch. Ianto comes second, because the quiet shy ones almost never stand out in realistic ways, he does. Tosh I love for the same reason.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?
I admit, I’m a sucker for shippy fics. Well written stories with a dash of romance and hurt/comfort are my favourites, but really anything where there is insight into the characters usually gets my attention. Really hot PWPs and interesting premises are also on my ‘always read’ list. Oh and I love post-countrycide fic. See above ;)

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?
I’m not a grammar-nazi. I’ll overlook small spelling mistakes and inconsistent grammar. For me, the telling of the story is more important. If I’m hooked by the first sentence, read avidly until the end, and want it to continue on? I’ll probably rec it!

Hiya, people!

How were you introduced to Torchwood?
It's a long story, but I'll try to keep it brief. When New Who was conceived, I heard about it, and saw the occasional episode, and the only thing that really stands out in my memory was, "Hey, Billie Piper can act," and that I was puzzled over John Barrowman's mid-Atlantic accent, because I couldn't place it.

Then I caught John Barrowman on the UK's Never Mind the Buzzcocks and an obsession was born. The more I was exposed to him, the more I wanted to see, so when the trailers for Torchwood series 2 were running, I was so there. In the mean time, I had also begun watching Doctor Who series 3, and the whole 'verse just talked to me in ways I hadn't been talked to in years.

Who is your favourite character, and why?
It varies between Jack and Ianto. I didn't like Jack much starting out, but fell hard for Ianto. But, as the series progressed, I came around to Jack's character. I find him fascinating, because there are so many layers to him; a caring side, a vicious side, a man who used to be a torturer but with such a passion for protecting his people... I never tire of watching that. Ianto, on the other hand, is damaged and hurt and still carrying on, and I connect with that, especially when writing fic.

What kind of fanfic do you like best?
I like the shorter fics, the ones that take an emotion or premise and show me a facet of a character in a small glimpse. I like deep emotion that grabs you by the throat, that makes you pause while reading, and I love good hurt/comfort. Most of what I read is relationship driven; I like romance and fucked up relationships that work anyway.

I like stories that explore a part of a character and take it beyond canon. I love it when an author can sell me an idea that I wouldn't have bought just off the cuff.

Oh, and I like kink. Give me good porn any day.

Is there anything in particular that you look for when you recommend fic?
Like I said above, the author needs to sell the story. If I read something and at the end find myself nodding and thinking, "Yes, this is how that would go," the author's done a good job. Stories also need to have emotion, whether it's anger, fear, or laughter. And the premise needs to be new, different, or one of the strongest approaches to an idea.

Also, I have a growing love for vids. The use of sound, lyrics, and imagery combines to show me different interpretations, often with great subtlety. When a vidder goes beyond just matching the lyrics to the images, that's when the truly great vids are born.

How were you introduced to Torchwood?

People kept nagging me because they said it was bisexual, poly and dirty and that I'd love the fussy guy in the suit. True enough, but that hardly even begins to touch my passion for this thing.

Who is your favourite character and why?

Critically speaking, I think they've done the best work with Ianto's arc, something that's of course a source of controversy in the post-CoE world. All his details come together into a remarkably organic whole, but it's really Jack who has always been my viewpoint character, so I guess I have to say I like him best. But man, do I miss Owen and Burn Gorman's acting too. (and now I feel terrible that I've only given shout-outs to the boys, but more Tosh never got her due and I don't think Gwen and I would be friends, even if she was rad in CoE).

What kind of fanfic do you like best?

I'm a romantic at heart. That doesn't mean I'm all about happy endings (except in the porn sense), but rather, that I'm all about emotion, satisfying conclusions and beauty in the face of tragedy.

Also sex that advances plot/character understanding. Gets me every time.

Is there anything in particular you look for when you recommend fic?

Details. I'm always looking for that one perfect phrase that illuminates what we always knew about a character but never knew how to say. Bring me that hook, and I'll forgive a lot.

I'm also a big fan of work that manages to keep heteronormative dynamics out of the Jack/Ianto relationship, which, considering Ianto handles Jack's dry cleaning, is harder than you'd think.
